Synopsis

A new life is just a phone call away!

Devi's life isn't turning out at all like she wanted. She wasted the past three years going out with Bryan—cute, adorable, break-your-heart Bryan. Devi let her friendships fade, blew off studying, didn't join any clubs . . . and now that Bryan has broken up with her, she has nothing left.

Not even her stupid cell phone—she dropped it in the mall fountain. Now it only calls one number . . . hers. At age fourteen, three years ago!

Once Devi gets over the shock—and convinces her younger self that she isn't some wacko—she realizes that she's been given an awesome gift. She can tell herself all the right things to do . . . because she's already done all the wrong ones! Who better to take advice from than your future self?

Except . . .what if getting what you think you want changes everything?

My Review

This book was a lot of fun! It was a light fluffy contemporary read with a bit of time travel thrown  in for good measure. Like the authors other works, particularly “10 things we did and probably shouldn’t have” which I have also read, the book is full of laughs and crazy teen antics.

The story is about Devi, who’s in her senior year of high school ready to embark on the next stage in her life, except things haven’t exactly turned out the way she had hoped. Her boyfriend has just dumped her, her friends have all become distant and the college she got into isn’t all that great. However after accidently dropping her phone into the mall fountain, and wishing she could have changed the outcome of her future, she can magically call her freshman self.

Senior year Devi, starts giving advice to her younger self about school, love and friends all in a bid to change her future. But even with the best intentions things don’t always go the way you plan, and if your younger self has ideas of her own *cough* trying to scam the lottery *cough* then things are definitely going to get chaotic.

The ‘time travel’ (for lack of a better term) aspect, reminded me somewhat of “The Future of Us” by Jay Asher (which I loved). Both stories have a similar concept, and talk about how even seemingly insignificant decisions can have such a huge impact on your life. The idea of being able to talk to my younger self and change some things about my future is very appealing, although after reading this book, I'd honestly be too scared I'd screw things up haha.

The main character could be on the annoying/frustrating side, and her motives were immature at times. But I like how she matured throughout the book, and by the end she had a much more grown-up outlook on life.

“I wonder-maybe the key is balance. Maybe it's about living in the moment while still keeping your eye on the big picture-on all the pictures.”

Overall I enjoyed “Gimme a Call”, it was a cute story with some moral lessons added and an ultimate underlying theme of living everyday to its fullest, because it’s not every day you get the chance to talk to your freshman self.

Things I loved about the book:

  • I really enjoy these types of 'time-travel' books.Where people are able to change their future, through their present actions.

Things I didn't so much like about the book:

  •  The main character could be a little annoying/frustrating at times. However she did develop and mature through the book.

My rating: 3/5

If you could talk to your younger self, what would you to tell them to do differently?

June 2014 Wrap-up

It's been a long time since I've regularly blogged, but I have managed to get some reading time in here and there during the month of June. Exam time meant lots of procrastinating which is when I did most of my reading. Naughty me! So anyway in June I finished up " A Game of Thrones", finished 2 full books, and 2 graphic novels.

Y: The Last Man - The Deluxe Edition Book One Y: The Last Man - The Deluxe Edition Book Two

I've recently gotten into graphic novels, and am keen to finish the Y-Man series by Brian K. Vaughn who also wrote the amazing Saga graphic novels. The first 2 editions of this series were amazing and got 5/5 from me (review to come soon). Game of Thrones was of course fantastic, but took me a life time to finish, so I won't be delving into the next one for a little bit. The Marriage Baragain was a super cute contemporary romance, which I intend on continuing with and will hopefully write a review for soon.

Up Next In July:

Guardian (Proxy, #2)Proxy (Proxy, #1)The Savages

Love You to Death & High Stakes (Mediator, #1-2)Trouble

So this month I have a week off where I intend on reading a crap-tonne before I'm back into school work for my last semester (hopefully forever). I also have an internship at the city Zoo which will keep me busy for 2 weeks (although I am super excited about it!!).

What books did You read in the Month of June, and which was your favorite? Book plans for the month of July?

If We Were Having Coffee #1

I have no idea who originally created this post, but I saw one on Book Nerd Canada's blog a little while back and thought it was a great idea to let readers updated on my life...only if they're interested :)

If we were having coffee... I’d tell you that my parents recently separated and even though I’m all grown up and moved out, it’s still really hard to deal with. Sometimes I feel like I’m being pulled by each of them in separate directions.

If we were having coffee... I’d tell you that I am so over University assignments and exams. This will be my 5th year of study and my 2nd degree and I’m over being a student and wish I hadn't wasted 3 years of my life doing something I didn't enjoy. But now that I have found my dream career I just want to be working full-time.

If we were having coffee... I’d tell you that I’m sorry for being so bad at posting reviews the last couple months. Between studying full-time, working part-time, and raising money for my volunteering I have little to no time for the little things I love to do, like checking out my fellow bloggers reviews, hauls and posts.

If we were having coffee... I’d tell you that in December I am jet-setting off along with some of my lecturers and class mates to Tonga as a vet nurse volunteer with SPAW (South Pacific Animal Welfare). I feel so privileged to have such an amazing opportunity.

If we were having coffee, what would you tell me about your life at the moment?
