There is so many YA book to movie
adaptations going on right now it’s hard to keep track, but the Vampire Academy
adaptation is one I have definitely been keeping a keen eye on. The trailer was
released about a week ago, and I have been wrestling since its release in
regards to my reaction to it. In a nutshell...it wasn’t what I expected. I
really want to reserve judgement, as its only a trailer, but there was just
something off about it.
The first half of the trailer almost made me want to claw my eyes out. It just was so out of place, and very
reminiscent of Gossip Girl. Not that I’m not a fan of GG but it’s really not
what VA is about. If I had not read the series, from the first 30seconds I
would just assume that the movie is about rich, elite vampires who stay up all
night and party, and have to deal with first-world (vampire) problems. The
second half of the trailer is much more of what I expected the movie to be.
Overall I wasn’t all that
impressed from the trailer. It just seems like the director has made it for the
masses, which thrive on cheesy chic flicks with vampires, rather than the loyal
fans of the series. I’m not sure if this will be one I want to see at the
movies yet, or just get out when it comes to DVD.
That the actor who plays Dimitri,
is actually from Russia. Authenticity...check.
The action scenes looked pretty decent, and Rose looks very much how I imagined her.
There seemed to be a major focus on sex in the trailer. Don’t
get me wrong, I love me a good sex scene, but for a YA book/movie it just
played too much focus in the trailer. I just hope that the rating isn’t high as
in R16, because that would be pretty unfair on the youngin’s who are big fans
of the series.
